Clinical Info - General

Polyphenols and human health is a rapidly emerging area of medical research. This is because it is now recognised that in terms of disease prevention and adjunctive treatment, they have multiple modes of action.

Firstly, Polyphenols have long been recognised as being powerful antioxidants, more potent in fact than traditional antioxidants (as much as 25-100 times more potent) such as beta-carotene, selenium and vitamins C and E (1). Importantly, when used in combination, polyphenols have been shown to have a synergistic effect (2). Their antioxidant efficacy is an important consideration given that several papers show that oxidative stress is the cause of, or an exacerbating factor in a wide range of diseases (3) including:

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Cardiovascular: Hypertension, Atherosclerosis, Coronary Artery Disease, Stroke/Ischemia-Reperfusion

  • Kidney Diseases: Diabetic Nephropathy, Urolithiasis

  • Liver Diseases: Necrotic Hep./Cirrhosis, Fatty Liver Disease, Wilson’s Disease, Viral Hepatitis, Fibrosis

  • Cancers: Breast, Prostate, Colorectal, Brain, Leukemia, Liver, Lung

  • Joint: Rheumatoid Arth., Temporomandib, Systemic Lupis, Erythmatosis Neurodegenerative: Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Autism, Amyt. Lat. Sclerosis

  • Blood: Beta-Thalassemia

  • Eye: Age-related Macular Deg., Diabetic Retinopathy, Cataract

  • Lung: Asthma, Pulmonary Fibrosis

Second, it is now understood that Polyphenols also exert pleiotropic or epigenetic effects (4), switching on and off certain genes and influencing various cell signaling pathways. Below is an example of these mechanisms imparted by just one of the Anteaox polyphenols – Formononetin (5)
